About the Artist

Jayne Wright is a West Yorkshire born musician and artist now based in Margate, Kent.
Since moving to Margate in 2021 she has been exploring her ceramic practice. Projects include The Mermaid Army (sculptures, plaques and tiles), Thanet Tiles of Joy (a community ceramic project with over 1000 local participants), Water Features, Tulip Vases and Reusables. Her work is steeped in narrative and she likes to explore positivity and joy.
Wright has exhibited at Lido Gallery, Turner Contemporary, Bridlington Art Waves Festival, Weston Super Mare Good Grief Festival, Open Folke Art 2024 and Art Car Boot Fair.

About the Artwork

Jayne Wright's Free the Nipple builds on her Mermaid Army series, which champions body positivity among sea swimmers, who celebrate diverse body types year-round. Based in Margate, Wright draws inspiration from the beach and her close connection to the sea, where she encountered queer swimmers and sex-positivity advocates who helped shape the conceptual direction of this work. The vase features a curved, figure-like form with three stems for floral arrangements, and two 'X' marks placed where nipples would be - an intentional reference to the censorship of female bodies on platforms such as Instagram, and a direct challenge to the double standards that continue to govern representations of gender and nudity.
