Proving that scale is no barrier to impact, Liminal Gallery is the UK’s smallest bricks-and-mortar contemporary gallery. Based in Margate, Liminal challenges the status quo with a bold and inclusive programme, platforming diverse and resonant voices from across the UK and Ireland. With a particular focus on women and artists from underrepresented backgrounds, Liminal stands as proof that change in the art world is not only possible, but already underway.
Founded in April 2021 as a digital and nomadic gallery, Liminal established its permanent space at 34 Fort Hill in October 2022. In 2023, it expanded with The Cupboard; a second, dedicated exhibition space created to support local artists with free, three-month residencies and solo exhibitions. It ensures a permanent connection to Margate’s creative community, offering artists a vital platform in a rapidly shifting landscape.
Liminal’s reach extends far beyond its small footprint. Through pop-up exhibitions, online programming, and collaborations with galleries and institutions in London and internationally, the gallery offers artists a global stage without losing its local soul.
This commitment to accessibility and visibility continues through the Liminal Gallery Podcast, launched in October 2022, which opens up the practices of exhibiting artists to listeners around the world.
