About the artist

German artist Zoe De Caluwé's (they/them, b. 1997, Hamburg, Germany) diverse practice encompasses sculpture, painting, and found objects. They unite these different genres through a craft-based approach to their creative process. Informed by memory and emotion, they create consciously flawed and playful pieces that delve into themes of identity and anxiety, evoking a deep sense of melancholy.

About the artwork

Zoe De Caluwé’s Iron Key reimagines the British folk tradition of the coin tree, presenting a charred tree stump embedded with coins as a site of ritual, wish-making, and quiet resistance. While the act of embedding coins speaks to themes of luck and healing, the inclusion of American cents subtly critiques contemporary consumerism and reflects on the socio-political landscape, particularly in relation to LGBTQIA+ rights. De Caluwé weaves personal and cultural narratives into the work, using tradition as a lens to explore identity, belonging, and the shifting symbolism of everyday objects.
