About the artist

Mercedes Lucy makes ceramics that are as personal as they are powerful—born from the kitchen, grief, motherhood, and the need to create in the chaos.

Her work is fast, intuitive, and full of feeling—driven by an ADHD-fuelled mind and a deep curiosity about the complexity of womanhood, motherhood, identity, relationships, and cliché. Her works carry stories, humour, contradictions, and observations—each one a fragment of something bigger.

She is a Studio Holder at Tracey Emin’s TKE Studios. Mercedes Lucy lives and works in Margate, Kent.

About the artwork

Hanging Pigs Trotters by Mercedes Workman confronts the viewer with weight and restraint—fleshy ceramic limbs suspended in a state of dense, bound tension, caught between being held up and held back, evoking the body as burden. The forms undulate with slick, ambiguous eroticism: swollen, intimate, and vulnerable, they seduce and repel in equal measure. With glazes mimicking skin, fat, and viscera, the ceramic medium transforms into flesh, complicating ideas of beauty, function, and revulsion. Refusing romantic metaphor, the raw naming of the work invokes the slaughterhouse and kitchen alike—foregrounding gendered labor, domestic ritual, and the consumption of bodies, both literal and symbolic.
