About the artist

Mercedes Lucy makes ceramics that are as personal as they are powerful—born from the kitchen, grief, motherhood, and the need to create in the chaos.

Her work is fast, intuitive, and full of feeling—driven by an ADHD-fuelled mind and a deep curiosity about the complexity of womanhood, motherhood, identity, relationships, and cliché. Her works carry stories, humour, contradictions, and observations—each one a fragment of something bigger.

She is a Studio Holder at Tracey Emin’s TKE Studios. Mercedes Lucy lives and works in Margate, Kent.

About the artwork

Golden Hands by Mercedes Lucy is a sculptural embodiment of pressure and containment—forms that appear squeezed into being, barely holding together under the weight of emotional and physical force. Glossy and liquid-like, the surface evokes the fluid, molten nature of memory: hard to hold, always shifting, a residue left behind after touch. Though hands are implied, they are abstracted—what remains is the ghost of contact, a gesture shielded by bulging, enclosing layers that both protect and confront. Seductive yet alien, the high-gloss finish reflects the viewer, turning something once intimate and human into an object that hovers between the industrial and the otherworldly.
