About the artist

Abigail Hampsey is a working-class painter from Lancashire, UK. Her work explores landscapes of memory, loss, and rural traditions through painting, sculpture, and poetry. She has exhibited widely in the UK and is a member of the Contemporary British Painting Collective.

About the artwork

In Wake up, Abigail Hampsey captures the awe of witnessing the Roman sunrise during her first weeks at a residency at The British School in Rome. The overwhelming beauty of morning light stirred reflections on nature’s majesty and the urgency of environmental collapse. An accidental self-portrait, the work uses her own body to explore the rural working-class female gaze within the historically male-dominated tradition of landscape painting. Through this intimate yet expansive scene, Hampsey questions who gets to depict the land and what “rural” can mean today, threading personal presence into broader cultural and ecological dialogues.
