IN BITS

INGRID BERTHON-MOINE & JENNIFER NIEUWLAND

3 - 24 February 2024

OVERVIEW

Liminal Gallery is delighted to announce its upcoming exhibition, ‘In Bits’, which examines the delicate interplay of strength and vulnerability through the works of artists Ingrid Berthon-Moine and Jennifer Nieuwland. Delving into the tactile nature of art, both artists employ texture as a central element encapsulated in dismembered limbs that echo the intricacies of the human experience.

Ingrid Berthon-Moine, a French artist based in London, is renowned for her multidisciplinary approach in exploring the physical and cultural dimensions of the human body. Her new works incorporate materials such as fake ostrich leather, velvet, and PVC to surround her delicate watercolour paintings exuding a tangible experience. Combining the strange and the familiar, her drawings defy conventional gender binaries with anthropomorphic forms, inviting viewers in a realm of ambiguity and disquieting sexuality. The chosen materials used disrupt concepts of softness and aggression, visual and tactile. Berthon-Moine invites us to contemplate the dynamics of intimacy and gender roles, to embrace a world where boundaries blur and ambivalence reigns.

Jennifer Nieuwland, a Dutch/Italian artist based in London, draws inspiration from bodily memories and everyday sensations, seeking to evoke their intangible quality; to capture that which cannot be contained by language. In her current series she explores both everyday and more momentous occurrences, incorporating new marks, textures and mediums to heighten the sensory qualities of her work. Jennifer investigates the female body and psyche in turmoil, subject to both external and internal forces. Painful emotions are disguised within the skin of her paintings through formal and material play. The tensions between beauty, horror and humour are negotiated in an attempt to achieve a charged and ambiguous encounter.

Both artists weave the 'felt' into their creations, embedded within bodily forms and the materials themselves. The incorporation of texture, mark, sheen, and colour heightens the emotional resonance, inviting viewers to explore the tragicomic experience of living in a body subjected to internal and external forces and tensions.
