JENNIFER NIEUWLAND

Jennifer Nieuwland (1977) lives and works in London. She was mostly self-taught before embarking on an MA in Fine Art at City and Guilds of London Art School which she completed in October 2021. This resulted in a marked shift in her practice which now navigates the weirdness and vulnerability of living in a body and its intangible sensory register.

She is interested in how paint encodes and activates felt experience. Her work hopes to encourage a dialogue about our interiority through an idiosyncratic painterly language. This is variously sticky, lumpy, scratched, fleshy, acting in visceral ways while in other instances it is soft, translucent, warm, quiet, conveying moments of introspection, fragility and comfort. These material antinomies echo the tensions, paradoxes and intricacies within her implicitly female experience, while disrupting the logic of her narrative and allowing universal meanings to emerge.

Nieuwland has recently completed an artist residency at Xenia Creative Retreat. She has recently exhibited in her first duo show at Liminal Gallery. Since completing her MA, she has been selected for various collective shows in London, Liverpool and Margate and for the cover of Ache Magazine 2023 and SuboArtMagazine 2024. She was longlisted for the John Moores painting prize and shortlisted for the ACS studio prize in 2023, the Studio West Now Introducing 2022 prize, the ING Discerning Eye and was a finalist of the Jacksons open painting prize.
