Liminal Gallery is delighted to present Long, an installation in The Cupboard by Margate-based artist Jayne Wright. In this new work, Wright explores the deep-rooted cultural significance of long hair in relation to femininity, identity, and power. Through a series of intricate ceramic pieces, she examines how long hair has been both an emblem of beauty and a site of control, shaped by historical customs and societal expectations.

Drawing inspiration from her great-grandmother—who, despite frequent headaches, refused to cut her hair, enduring the weight and ritual of wearing it up—Wright highlights the resilience and quiet defiance embedded in this intimate act of self-expression.

‘Long’ also reflects on the ways contemporary women reclaim long hair as a political statement, resisting outdated ideals and embracing autonomy over their own image. Wright’s delicate yet powerful installation invites viewers to reconsider the personal and cultural narratives woven into something as seemingly simple as hair.
